Know Your .ORG

As a test to see how good you think you know what your nonprofit stands for, start first with your board of directors. Ask each individual board member privately to tell you as if you were a stranger all about the nonprofit they serve.
Time the person and see if they can talk to you for at least five minutes. While this may sound easy, you would be surprised how few can actually do this!

With this in mind, ask yourself the question, "If the board of directors can't even tell me about the nonprofit then, what does the public truly know?"

Define Your Organization
Who Are You? What may seem like a silly question to ask of you and your non-profit, is actually a pretty serious one.

You know the impact of your organization and that what you do in the communities that you serve is of great service. However, because of the daily grind of managing your nonprofit and your clients, you and your management team can easily let marketing initiatives fall to the bottom of your "To Do" list. Here are a few tips to consider in order to get your "Marketing Train" back on track.

Be Human
This sounds sort of obvious because how can you not be human? Well, have you looked at your website and promotional materials lately? Does it sound like any humans actually work at your organization? Most websites and marketing materials do not sound human at all - which is a huge challenge for non-profits that want to be successful, because people don’t connect with organizations, they connect with People.

Brand Your Organization
Your organization is a brand and, whether you like it or not, people already have an opinion about you. This "identity" is based on your written word but it's also based on more tangible things like how you treat people, what kind of work you do and the impact you have had on your community. Your Voice, the tone of all of your communications, should reflect your brand and be consistent with your mission and goals being crystal clear.
